How to Polish Rocks

A simple guide to polishing rocks. Great for children of all ages to participate in.

Steps

   Take a clean, empty plastic jar (like a mayo jar) and fill it with 1/3 of a cup of sand.

   Slowly, add water to the jar until there is a little more water than sand.

   Put in your rocks. Don't put in too many rocks; leave plenty of room in the jar.

   Screw the lid on to jar until it's tight. Take some duct tape and place it around the lid. Make sure it's very tight so that the water can't leak out.

   Start shaking the jar. Shake it until your arms hurt. Then pass it to another friend and shake it until their arms go numb. Then give it to your little brother/sister or your kids and let them roll it around on the floor. This is how the rocks are smoothed out and polished. This will take a few weeks, or even longer, but if you stay committed it will be worth the effort!

   If you want a lot of rocks polished for a craft project, consider buying a rock tumbler. This does basically the same thing as the jar of sand, but automatically and with much less effort on your part. You can get tumblers at hobby shops. The down side is, they can be expensive if you want a good, fast one.

Tips

• Check your rocks every few weeks to see how they're coming along.
• Never use a glass jar! Glass can crack and be a safety hazard.
• If you're ever bored or your children are complaining about nothing to do, pull the jar down and give it to them. Smaller kids especially will love to kick it around and watch it roll.

• Do not leave it in the sun. You want polished rocks, not bacteria-covered rocks.
• Don't leave small children alone with the jar. Watch them if they want to play with it.
• Be sure the cap is tight and the duct tape is put on properly. Otherwise you could have a sandy wet mess all over your living room floor.
• Make sure you use a container that won't crack when you shake and roll it. You will end up with a mess just like if you dump it out.

Depois dê o pote para seu irmão mais novo ou para seu filho e deixe ele rolar o pote pelo chão. É assim que as pedras são alisadas e polidas. Isso levará algumas semanas ou até mais, mas se você estiver comprometido, seu esforço será recompensado!

   Se você quer muitas pedras polidas para um trabalho artesanal, por exemplo, compre um rock tumbler (polidor elétrico). Ele faz basicamente a mesma coisa que o pote de areia, mas de forma automática e com muito menos esforço de sua parte. Você pode encontrar tumblers em lojas de brinquedo. A desvantagem é que você pode pagar caro se quiser um bom e rápido.

Dicas

• Dê uma olhada nas pedras a cada semana para ver como elas estão.
• Quando você se sentir entediado ou seus filhos reclamarem que não tem nada pra fazer, dê o pote pra eles. As crianças, principalmente as pequenas, irão adorar chutar o pote por aí e vê-lo rolar.

Avisos

• Certifique-se de que a tampa esteja bem fechada e a fita adesiva colocada de forma apropriada. Caso contrário, você pode acabar tendo uma bagunça de areia molhada bem no meio da sua sala.
• Não deixe crianças pequenas sozinhas com o pote. Se eles quiserem brincar com ele, fique de olho.
• Não deixe o pote no sol. Você quer pedras polidas, e não cheias de bactéria.
• Certifique-se de utilizar um pote que não irá quebrar quando você chacoalhar e rolar ele.
