Carlos Slim's gold mining plans opposed by Mexican village
A small village in central Mexico is fighting against billionaire Carlos Slim’s plans to mine precious metals in the region, claiming the activity would have environmental impacts to the community. The gold and silver deposits are located at the La Espejera hill in Puebla state, where Slim’s mining company, Frisco, has been granted a 50-year license to develop it.
Frisco is still prospecting the region and the exploration is expected to begin December, when licenses from the federal government are expected to be granted. Local groups say gold and silver mining at the hill will pollute waterbeds from where some 40,000 inhabitants obtain water, and wildlife would be affected as well.
