Resumo et al. Study of diamond recovery tailings from Poxoréu region, east of Mato Grosso State. Geociênc. (São Paulo) [online].
Studies on diamond mining tailing
from the region of Poxoréu, were performed, aiming their application as
industrial sand. The Poxoréu region is in economic stagnation since the
decline of diamond exploration, which began in the 1920s. These
activities generated large amounts of tailing, which was disposed
haphazardly, covering a vast portion of the basins of the Poxoréu and
Alto Coité rivers. This study consisted of granulometric and geochemical
analysis of 11 samples selected that showed good representation for the
area. Granulometric studies suggested that most samples can be used
both in the foundry industry, as in glass manufacturing. The geochemical
data showed that all samples may be used by the construction industry.
With the exception of two samples, whose TiO
2 content exceeds
the limits of the specifications ABNT, the others can be used in the
industries of glass container and foundry, after undergoing treatment
for removal of iron and aluminum. Another application of the material
analyzed would be considered for use in glass industry, since they
showed low concentrations of titanium, magnesium, manganese, chromium,
potassium, sodium and calcium, outside granulometric aspect mentioned.
Research focused on prospecting for gold are suggested, since the
geochemical analysis showed the presence of this element in almost all
samples.
