Breaking news: white, 3,703 carat diamond found at Juína
Since the mid-nineties the small, western Brazilian city of Juína witnesses a booming mining interest, thanks to the gems and precious metals in its soil. Local economy is boosted by these activities but, all in all, the scenario is just like other areas in Brazil. But things are going to change: a giant diamond was found in early March, and it may set a new stage on Juína activities.
That's a white, 3,703 carat diamond found in a garimpo (mining area with no infrastructure and usually held by individuals, instead of companies) about 25 kilometres away from the city. The gem is being called "Didi" and was found by a local miner; only three people knew of the finding, but a gem specialist hired by the diamond owner wrote an email telling us about the extraordinary "Didi"; he says it has a natural lapidation and probably will receive only a few cuts to highlight its shining. It is named after Brazilian humorist Renato "Didi Mocó" Aragão, which is reported to look like the author of the finding.
